The PwC Scholars have had a busy start to this semester with many exciting events and bringing new Scholars into the program! Continue reading to find out what we’ve been up to.
Tuesday, August 30: Annual Kickoff Event
This year’s annual kickoff event was Olympic-themed, and ten teams of different colors competed for glory. Prior to the
games, we enjoyed a welcome from our PwC partner Matt Singer and lead recruiter Nikki Brune. Students also got to know more Scholars as they bonded with teammates, participating in events including a three-legged race and human knot.
Monday September 5: Labor Day Hike
Taking advantage of a beautiful day off, about 40 Scholars came together for a morning hike in the BU Nature Preserve. We spent a few hours together enjoying the sites in our backyard and meeting new people along the way!
Sunday, September 11: Speed Dating
In order to better acquaint upperclassmen and underclassmen, all Scholars attended a “speed-dating” event. Quick rounds of conversation with fun topics allowed everyone to get to know each other as freshmen and sophomores rotated seats to meet juniors and seniors. This event gave new Scholars the opportunity to expand their connections in the program.
Tuesday, September 20: Ignite Competition
The 7th Annual Ignite Competition was a major success, raising over $10,000 and connecting over 100 students with different firms and professionals. Run entirely by a team of Scholars, the event allows participants to showcase their soft skills by completing different challenges in collaboration with their team. Recruiters are able to observe leadership, team work, and problem-solving abilities while connecting in a more social setting with students.
Friday, September 23: Apple Picking at Russell Farms
To kick off Homecoming weekend, we headed to Russell Farms for apple picking! We were joined by several Scholars alumni as well as our PwC recruiter, Nikki Brune. Apple picking was followed by lunch from Alexander’s Café, hay rides, and the chance to buy produce and baked goods at the farm. Our first off-campus social event was a huge hit.
Saturday, September 24: Homecoming Tailgate
Following Friday’s apple picking, we continued the fun with a Tailgate on Saturday prior to the men’s soccer game. The Scholars Executive Board manned the grill, serving up food for everyone who stopped by. The tailgate was the perfect opportunity to socialize with both Scholars and other student groups tabling at the event.
Sunday, September 25: Speaker Series and Town Hall
Our first Speaker Series of the semester hosted Uvarshanie Nandram, a member of the Product Oversight Team at Bloomberg. She spoke about her journey from Binghamton to Bloomberg, and how she handled the many hurdles along the way. Graduating as a finance major during the financial crisis, Uvashranie continuously positioned herself so that she could take advantage of every opportunity. Her intelligence, foresight, and drive brought her to her current position at Bloomberg. In the second half of Uvashranie’s speech, she gave her advice on how to brand ourselves on social media and use our online presence as an asset.
Friday, October 7: BU Scholars Social
To encourage connections between PwC Scholars and BU Scholars, we held a joint social event. Mixed teams competed in a game of Jeopardy featuring trivia and brain teasers. This was an awesome event to allow students from both programs to meet and get to know each other!
Sunday, October 9: Speaker Series and Town Hall
Our second speaker of the semester was Justin Joseph, a current developer of the financial practice at DayNine Consulting. A prominent Binghamton Alumni, Justin was presented the 2014 Distinguished Young Alumni Award by the Binghamton University Alumni Association. His presentation covered his advice for becoming a distinguished alumnus, as well as his career path after graduating from Binghamton with his MBA. He answered our questions regarding the consulting industry and the importance of giving back to our community.
Thank you to everyone who made these events possib
le, and especially to those alumni that joined us during Homecoming weekend and our speakers. Stay tuned to see what we’re up to during the rest of the year!
